The Limousines - “Very Busy People”

The Limousines remind me of Barcelona, a band from the late 90s/early 00s that glorified their journey through nerdom and computer camp. The Limousines follow a similar path in “Very Busy People” with a catchy, synthed-out sheen.

Imogen Heap - “First Train Home”

Gen Y’s very own Enya, Imogen Heap, came out with her new album last week. Admittedly, this news excites me greatly. “First Train Home” is her first single.

Pretty Lights - “Solamente”

I’m just getting hip to Pretty Lights. It’s like Girl Talk + John Coltrane, a savvy reinterpretation of mashups, remixes, and DJ culture.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - “Home”

For those who like She and Him, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros include the same back and forth volley between male and female vocals. The conversastion midway through the song is perfect: “Jane?” “Alexander.”

the dodos - “Fables”

In an interview with Ben Lee years ago, I remember Lee saying he preffered acoustic guitars because he thought an acoustic guitar produced a harder, edgier sound than an electric guitar. At times, the same aesthetic is present on the dodos new album, Time to Die. Though “Fables” doesn’t have quite the nervy edge much of the record has, the song is highly contagious. I’ve played “Fables” an obsessive amount of times. So now it’s time I pass it along.

MGMT - “Hot Love Drama”

With “Hot Love Drama,” MGMT serves up steamy, disco noveau to its loyal following. It might be just in time for a bottom of the ninth summer anthem.

Memory Cassette - “Last One Awake” (Friend Version)

Reggae is the real trailblazer for the steel drum. But this version of “Last One Awake” makes brilliant use of an oft overlooked instrument. More steel drum, please.

Spindrift - “The Legend of God’s Gun”

Like the soundtrack from a Quentin Tarantino movie, Spindrift is an unlikely yet stirring brew of psychadelia and 70s westerns. In the gritty and dangerous genre of shoot-out rock, Spindrift is the golden gun. If I could insert a tumbleweed blowing across the screen now, I would.

Dan Black - “Symphonies”

Dan Black playfully sings over an instantly recognizable sample taken from Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and a chorus borrowed from Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize.” On paper, it reads like a recipe for pop nostalgia disaster. But it plays out like an airy summer single, comfortable with its nods to the past and proud of its future as a hit all its own.
