Wale - “New Soul”

Chiddy Bang and Kid Cudi got a lot of coverage in the last year. But my favorite newcomer of 2009 was D.C. rapper, Wale.

Fool’s Gold - “Nadine”

More often than not, the vocals are in Hebrew. The band plays Afropop. And they’re from L.A. It all sounds strange, but it’s one of the best new albums I’ve heard in a long time. Do yourself a favor going into the New Year and buy this album.

Phantogram - “Mouthful of Diamonds”

I’m loving Phantogram’s music. No full-length album yet. In the meantime, check out their tunes on the hype machine.

CocoRosie - “Happy Eyez”

Above is a picture of one of the two sisters that make up CocoRosie. It shouldn’t surprise you if you hear the influence of Bjork on CocoRosie’s vocals . I think they shop for clothes at the same place too.

Meaghan Smith - “Heartbroken”

This post marks the second noteworthy artist from Nova Scotia. Between Wintersleep and Meaghan Smith, it would seem Halifax is a budding music scene. Philip Glass also spends a lot of time in Nova Scotia. Music is born in unsuspecting places. Strange, but true.

The Hood Internet - “Just a Friendomania”

Love or hate mashups, these guys are awesome at their jobs. It’s also great to see Biz Markie getting some well deserved love. Happy Friday to all.

Boat - “Lately”

“Lately” sounds like The Cars and John Sebastian’s “Welcome Back” rolled into one great song.

Fuck Buttons - “Surf Solar”

Like Animal Collective or The Field, Fuck Buttons craft sonic landscapes with texture and seriality. Their music is a cyclical exploration rather than linear. “Surf Solar” is a long track, but worth the time.
